Through the lens of commuters: Participatory photo-voice insights from Sardinia's railway users
This study used the Photovoice method to document the daily travel experiences of 13 regular commuters on the Iglesias–Cagliari railway line in Sardinia, Italy. Participants captured photographs and wrote narratives about their journeys, which were analyzed using the SHOWeD protocol and thematic analysis. The analysis identified five core themes: emotional experiences, meaningful transit locations, structural issues like poor connection timing and staff shortages, perceived safety, and the symbolic meanings of travel.
Why it matters — It demonstrates how participatory visual methods can capture subjective emotional states, safety concerns, and localized infrastructure failures that traditional quantitative transit planning metrics typically overlook.
Caveat: The findings are based on a very small sample of 13 commuters on a single regional railway line, which limits the direct generalizability of the specific local issues identified.
