A location-aware calibration framework was developed and validated across eight diverse urban sites in Loughborough Town Centre to mitigate sensor bias in pedestrian analytics. In Dhaka's Gulistan and Gulshan commercial areas, researchers analyzed the mobility patterns and socio-economic characteristics of 384 small business owners and employees using descriptive statistics, multiple regression, and Principal Component Analysis. Finally, a robust vehicle routing model was designed for humanitarian logistics to coordinate trucks and flexible docking drones under hierarchical delivery deadlines and uncertain drone energy consumption.

Robust vehicle routing problem with flexible docking drones in humanitarian logistics

The study models a vehicle routing problem that allows drones to launch from one truck and land on another, incorporating hierarchical delivery deadlines and uncertain drone energy consumption. To solve this, the researchers developed a mixed-integer linear programming formulation and an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) algorithm, testing it on small- and large-scale simulated instances.

Why it matters — It introduces a flexible docking mechanism that allows cooperative truck-drone fleets to operate under disrupted post-disaster conditions, proving that decoupling drone launch and recovery vehicles improves delivery performance and service coverage.

Caveat: The algorithm's performance and the routing model's benefits were evaluated using simulated benchmark instances rather than real-world post-disaster deployment data.

Mitigating sensor bias: a location-aware calibration framework for pedestrian analytics

A location-aware calibration framework was developed and validated across eight diverse urban sites in Loughborough Town Centre, UK, using multi-day ground-truth observations. The framework corrects passive WiFi sensor data, which systematically undercounts pedestrian volumes by approximately 50%, raising data accuracy to 85.8% and enabling the creation of high-resolution pedestrian flow maps.

Why it matters — It establishes a method to transform unreliable, low-cost passive sensor data into accurate spatial intelligence, correcting distorted narratives of urban movement and revealing functional hierarchies that are invisible in raw sensor outputs.

Caveat: The calibration framework was developed and validated using data from only eight specific sites within a single UK town center.

Assessing the influence of intra-urban mobility on small business dynamics in Gulistan and Gulshan commercial areas of Dhaka

This study analyzed the mobility patterns and socio-economic characteristics of 384 small business owners and employees in Dhaka's Gulistan and Gulshan commercial areas using descriptive statistics, multiple regression, and Principal Component Analysis. The analysis revealed that workers in Gulshan experience shorter commutes, lower residential mobility, and higher educational attainment compared to those in Gulistan, who face longer travel distances and higher transport costs. Regression modeling identified gender and commuting distance as the primary predictors of commuting time, while a classification model distinguished the structural differences between the two commercial zones with 94% accuracy.

Why it matters — It provides empirical evidence of how intra-urban mobility constraints and residential choices differ sharply between formal and informal commercial hubs within the same city, establishing a baseline for gender-responsive transport and mixed-use zoning policies.

Caveat: The findings are based on a relatively small sample of 384 survey respondents across only two commercial districts in Dhaka, which may limit generalizability to other commercial areas in the city.

Flood susceptibility assessment using GIS and an analytical hierarchy process in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara, Nigeria

This study mapped flood susceptibility in the Ilorin Metropolis, Nigeria, by integrating nine environmental and infrastructural factors derived from January 2024 ASTER GDEM and Landsat 8 imagery using an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The resulting model classified 42.8% of the metropolitan area as highly or very highly susceptible to flooding, with the greatest risk concentrated along the Asa River corridor and low-lying urban zones. Validation against 200 reference points demonstrated an overall classification accuracy of 96.5%, a sensitivity of 1.00, and a Cohen's kappa of 0.919.

Why it matters — It provides a highly accurate, validated spatial baseline of flood risk for a rapidly growing Nigerian metropolis, offering local planners precise geographic targets for flood mitigation and infrastructure development where empirical data was previously scarce.

Caveat: The susceptibility model relies on remote sensing data from a single point in time (January 2024), which may not capture seasonal variations in vegetation and land cover that influence runoff dynamics.

Weather, extreme heat, and everyday spending in cities: Evidence from longitudinal and nationwide credit card transactions in South Korea

This study analyzed nationwide credit card transactions across South Korea from 2019 to 2020 to measure how apparent temperature, precipitation, and consecutive extreme-heat days affect daily spending. Compared to a comfortable 20–25 °C baseline, days with apparent temperatures of 33 °C or higher saw overall transactions rise by 3.44% while total expenditure fell by 2.30%. Additionally, a 10-mm increase in precipitation reduced transactions by 1.05%, and each consecutive extreme-heat day over the prior three days depressed transaction frequency by 0.34% and spending by 1.60%.

Why it matters — It establishes that extreme heat does not just shift spending patterns but actively suppresses overall expenditure, while demonstrating that local factors like coastal geography, population density, and age structure alter how resilient a city's local economy is to weather shocks.

Caveat: The findings rely on credit card transaction data, which may not fully capture cash-based transactions or informal economic activities.
