Two counts, not one counted twice: every row here but “on the same shoulders” counts the papers published above, and that one counts every paper this day named — those and the ones under Also published today, whose abstracts we could not read.

Evaluating the evolution of urban ecosystem service assessment research through bibliometric and science mapping analysis

This study analyzed 4,821 academic articles on urban ecosystem service assessment published between 1996 and 2024 from the Web of Science Core Collection. Using the bibliometric and science mapping tools VOSviewer and SciMAT, it tracked the field's thematic evolution from early environmental valuations and land-use changes to more complex socio-ecological themes, including cultural services and institutional frameworks.

Why it matters — It maps nearly three decades of research to reveal that despite the field's expansion, environmental dimensions still disproportionately dominate the literature, exposing a critical gap in how researchers address socio-economic inequalities, governance, and behavioral drivers.

Caveat: The analysis is limited to literature indexed within the Web of Science Core Collection, potentially omitting relevant studies published in other databases or non-English languages.
